Can I checkout a physical book that is also in HathiTrust (ETAS)?

UPDATE:  Effective Tuesday September 7 2021, UC San Diego is no longer participating in ETAS.  Only items out of copyright can be viewed full-text.

Unfortunately, at the moment, UC San Diego library is unable to fulfill requests of physical books that are within HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS). Checking out a physical book that is a part of ETAS would endanger access for all the UC San Diego students, staff, and faculty who are using this service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In order to maintain our agreement and provide online access to materials available in HathiTrust, we may not circulate material available through ETAS (directly, through Circuit, or via Interlibrary loan). The HathiTrust Digital Library is responding to the current emergency by providing the UC system with temporary access to books still under copyright in their digital library that are also in the UC Libraries’ physical collections for as long as our library buildings remain closed. We would violate the terms of this agreement, which is designed to respect Fair Use of copyrighted material, if we provided physical access to materials that are also being made available via the HathiTrust site.

San Diego public libraries and university libraries may have a print book available, so check Circuit and the local public libraries' catalogs to borrow a book directly.  The public libraries also have numerous e-books  and e-audio novels for recreational reading in addition to non-fiction titles.

Note to non-UC students living in the San Diego area.  Your university's library may also be participating in HathiTrust ETAS.  Check the list of participating institutions.
