Last updated: Oct 10, 2025
Learn about support for UC San Diego authors navigating journal Article Processing Charges (APCs).
Topic specialist: Contact the Scholarly Communication Lead Librarian, or visit the UCSD Library Scholarly Communication Services page.
Questions that could lead you to these resources:
- I'm publishing an article in a [publisher name] and it asks me to pick between open access (for $4000) or not.
- We are planning to submit our manuscript for publication in [journal name]. Could you please let us know after UC discounts and UC library agreements how much we should pay for Article processing fees.
- How do I get accurate information about help with publishing charges. I'm trying to find journals where I don't need to pay with my personal funds.
The response can be complicated. Check the UC-wide OA publishing agreements list and contact UCSD Library Scholarly Communication Services for help in navigating the process.
UC-Wide OA publishing agreements: On this page, you will find the Journal Open Access Look-up Tool (JOLT), a service designed specifically for UC authors to easily determine if a journal qualifies under one of UC’s open access publishing agreements.
Note that these agreements are: General FAQ for UC Open Access Agreements - Office of Scholarly Communication
- For UC-affiliated authors only. The corresponding author must be UC-affiliated (you should always use your UCSD email when corresponding and choose UCSD as your affiliation)
- Sometimes for just a discount and not full coverage
- For a specific duration of time as we enter and leave negotiations
- Not all publication types or journals are covered
- Only covering the open access APCs, no other publishing fee is included
